Downtown Denton Main Street (DDMS), an organization dedicated to improving the downtown marketplace, hosts the Supper at Sunset as its main fundraising event every year.
Along with grants from state and federal sources, Supper at Sunset makes it possible for DDMS to update flags, planters and benches that can be found lining Market Street up to about 4th Street. This organization also draws tourism and attracts people from local counties to shop locally in Denton establishments.
The annual dinner fundraiser is always a lovely evening affair, with local business owners and guests in attendance. This year’s event was held on Friday evening, May 30, with dishes and service provided by several local establishments: Earth Tones Café served a light fresh spinach and strawberry salad, Craft Bakery & Café provided baskets of fresh delicious breads, and Caroline’s Table’s Chef Eric provided beautifully crafted charcuterie boards and a thick, rich crab bisque for the soup course. The entire event was hosted at the Market Street Public House. The facilities gleamed and shone, with delicate flower arrangements provided by Patti’s Petals Florist, Gardens and Gifts. The Culinary Center provided a meal served in style and elegance, with volunteer servers treating each attendee as an honored guest.
At the end of this splendid meal, two works of art, still wet from their creation and painted by local artists from the Caroline County Council of Arts, were auctioned off to raise more funds for DDMS.
Jessica Willoughby, Executive Director of DDMS, is passionate about the town and the people here. Her vision for Denton is to make an impact that makes everything better for everyone.
With a background in communications and a love for people, Jessica has worked hard and learned the grant-writing skills required in order to bring as much opportunity as possible for local business owners. One such grant comes through the Department of Housing and Community Development. The funds will be used to restore the community garden in Denton and for downtown beautification. Downtown Denton Main Street is an offspring organization of Main Street Maryland, whose mission is to strengthen the economic potential of Maryland’s traditional main streets and neighborhoods.
Jessica said she could not have pulled off the event without the help of everyone who brought their talents and skills to bear. She even wanted to make it clear that the board of directors for DDMS was instrumental in seeing the event come to fruition. Her laser focus on Friday evening displayed her leadership of this organization as she gazed out over every course of the meal, taking in every detail and seeing to it that every guest had everything they needed to enjoy the night. It was a beautiful event, designed to keep our own Denton beautiful and thriving.
