The statesmen and the militia worked together with the stroke of the pen and the shot of the musket in 1775 to fight for the American colonies’ collective independence from Great Britain. The battle for independence that began in 1775 was memorialized in the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
250 years later, Caroline County Commissioners and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 29 (SAL), worked together to honor the founding of the United States of America with unveiling of a monument on the county courthouse green.
In October 2025, SAL representative Fordie Brown requested to place the black granite monument on the courthouse green at a commissioners meeting, with unanimous approval by the Commissioners. Brown organized the unveiling event, which included presentation of colors by the Caroline County Sheriff Department Color Guard, invocation by veteran Pastor Don Reynolds, remarks from Commission President Travis Breeding, and formal monument dedication by SAL Commander Chuck Pittinger. John Coleman, a former Denton resident and Talbot County Sheriff Deputy 1st Class, sang the Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful to a group of onlookers decked in red, white, and blue.
The monument stands near the entrance to the courthouse, and reads, “We the people of Caroline County, Maryland do commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation on this day. July 4, 1776. July 4, 2026. (Presented by the) Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 29, Denton, MD”
