Featured Artist of the Month – Janice Knauss

Acrylic, oils, watercolors. Current medium: Burlap and ink www.etsy.com/shop/JsArtDesigns

I’ve been interested in drawing and painting all of my life. I remember using pens and pencils on line-paper when I was very little. My favorite time in school was spent in art class or on projects requiring crafts. Sketching was fun for me and then I worked with oil paint and watercolors and then acrylics.

My grandmother loved to make crafts and was my greatest influence. She taught me sewing, crochet and embroidery. I watched her make big flower arrangements and give them away as gifts.

My father wanted me to have a good business education and so I received my bachelor’s degree in business at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. I took all the art classes I could within the curriculum and the required marketing courses improved my outlook on the benefits of selling my artwork one day. I furthered my education with graphic design and journalism courses at Delaware Technical Community College and then worked for six years as a graphic designer for local newspapers.

I live with my husband and two children in Goldsboro. While my kids are at school I paint and sometimes I visit their school as a volunteer and help the art teacher display students’ artwork.

My work usually involves the outdoors. Whether my subjects are fish, flowers or animals, I like to bring the viewer outdoors. I grew up and still live in a rural area of Goldsboro and most of what I paint or sketch is what I have seen for myself.
I have artwork hanging at the Foundry which makes me very proud and I started an Etsy Shop with the hope of selling my artwork online. I also have artwork on the Foundry’s Etsy shop.

My favorite time away from my artwork is spent with my husband and two children. We take day trips to visit family and we go to parks and museums
