Maryland Ornithological Society (MOS) is a nonprofit, statewide organization of people who are interested in birds and nature. It was founded in 1945 and incorporated in 1956 to promote the study and enjoyment of birds. MOS promotes knowledge about our natural resources and fosters its appreciation and conservation. The Society also maintains a system of sanctuaries to encourage the conservation of birds and bird habitat, and to help record and publish observations of bird life.

Local chapters throughout the state offer field trips, bird counts, and conservation projects for members and guests. Lively and informative programs complement regular meetings where members and guest speakers share their knowledge and expertise.

Due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic we have cancelled our Saturday, May 2 Bird Trip to Killens Pond State Park and Thursday, May 21 Evening Bird Walk at Martinak State Park.

The Maryland Ornithological Society made a decision on April 17 not to hold this year’s May Count due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

However, MOS came up with a fun, safe alternative – a home-based, carbon-free state-wide count, a weekend of birding in our neighborhoods and participating in Cornell’s Global Big Day. Counters will be urged to limit their travel to walking or cycling and to observe the social distancing guidelines. To maximize the chance of good weather, the count will include both Saturday, May 9th and Sunday, May 10th.
