Many churches across Caroline County have a long tradition of hosting Vacation Bible School programs. These events are designed to offer a introduction to the church in the form of recreation, music, skits, and other kid-centered activities over a span of a few days.
Garrett Shull coordinates St. Luke’s VBS. He said that the program is a way “to reach those in our community about God and the good works happening in our church.” Kasey Perza, Coordinator of Religious Education at St. Benedict / St. Elizabeth’s, noted the fun aspect of VBS programs for youngsters, “We continue to hold VBS because first and foremost the kids LOVE it,” she said, “I still have kids from last year coming up to me and telling me how much fun they had!”
But in addition to the faith and fun, VBS programs quietly serve the community in critical ways, especially in a rural area like Caroline County.
Vacation Bible Schools are affordable – most are free or the cost is nominal. This is important in a county where 25% of the population lives below 150% of the poverty line. While some families may not be able to afford the trips to the beach or state fairs, VBS programs are accessible ways to include children in summertime fun.
For a few days a month, VBS offers a place for children to gather and expend their energy. It seems we no longer see kids riding their bikes to their friends’ houses. Summertime entertainment is up to busy caregivers planning playdates, day trips, and just anything that will keep their elementary schooler entertained that doesn’t involve a screen. VBS programs can take the cost and guesswork out of the equation.
Many churches include a free or extremely affordable meal along with their bible school, and all of them at least give children who may not have the same amenities at home a clean, cool place to exist for a few hours. Those who may be struggling can get connected to helpful resources through the church as a result of attending VBS.
Vacation Bible Schools are available at St. Benedict / St. Elizabeth Parish, St. Luke’s Methodist Church, Calvary Baptist Church, Greensboro Baptist Church, Greater Impact, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Denton Church of the Nazarene, Bethesda Methodist Church, among others in the county and surrounding area.
