DENTON - Fordie Brown, a member of the Sons of American Legion (SAL) Squadron 29 in Denton, requested the Caroline County Commissioners’ approval to erect a monument on the Caroline County Circuit Courthouse green commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. “Everybody in my organization is 100% agreeable with this,” he said.
The three Commissioners were as well and voted unanimously to approve the project, although the exact location of the monument is yet to be determined.
Brown said the 44-inch high, polished black granite monolith would feature a U.S. flag and the SAL insignia in color with the inscription “We the people of Caroline County MD Do commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of our Nation on this day. July 4, 1776 - July 4, 2026.”
“I think it’s very fitting,” Bartz said. “You have my support.”
Expected delivery of the granite would be in three to four months. Quotes were received from three businesses, and the SAL chose Moore Memorials, Inc. of Denton to complete the project, pending the Commissioners’ approval.
The Commissioners directed Jamie Beechey, Director Recreation and Parks to determine possible locations for the monument.
