DENTON – In a Facebook post on Monday, January 5, the Town of Denton announced that they would be pursuing a grant to fund a dog park. In the post, the Town asked residents to send in emails of support for the project to attach to their grant application.
The dog park would be located at Sharp Road Park just between the existing basketball court and Sharp Road. This idea has been in the works for a while – a dog park was included in the Town’s Master Plan for Sharp Road Community Park, which was approved by the Town Council in April of 2023. So when the possibility of a grant presented itself in October of 2025, town officials jumped at the opportunity.
“A public dog park can offer many meaningful impacts to residents. They can enhance community livability, promote responsible pet ownership, and expand inclusive recreational opportunities,” said Town Manager Scott Getchell. Once the Town submits the grant application this month, Getchell said he expects to hear if Denton will be receiving funds by summertime.
Before the application is turned in, the Town hopes to have plenty of support from residents, businesses, and other organizations. Those interested in having their testimony attached to the grant application can email Getchell at sgetchell@dentonmaryland.com a brief statement on why a dog park would be a valuable addition to the community. Emails of support are due by January 9, 2026.
