It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Shirley Mae Corkell, who passed away on April 14, 2025, at the remarkable age of 93. Born on February 25, 1932, in West Chester, PA, Shirley was the cherished youngest daughter of Georgia May Bowersox and Charles Ambrose Myers, joining a family of six siblings.
Shirley's childhood was spent exploring the enchanting landscapes of Longwood Gardens, where her father served as the groundskeeper, instilling in her a lifelong love for nature and flowers. A proud graduate of Kennett Square High School's class of 1949, she embarked on her career at a local department store. There, fate intervened when she met her beloved husband, the late Calvin Corkell, during a delivery. They were married and established their home in Caroline County, MD, where they lovingly raised five sons and one daughter.
Shirley was a devoted and hardworking woman. Her love for nature was only surpassed by her unwavering commitment to her children, whom she always placed above all else. A woman of faith, she regularly attended church on Sundays. Shirley found joy in music, the excitement of bingo, and spirited card games like Crazy Eights and Gin Rummy. She also enjoyed evenings at the American Legion, where she savored music and shrimp.
Shirley's warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched countless lives. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In addition to her husband and 5 siblings, Shirley is preceded in death by her 2 sons, David and Jimmy Corkell.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Corkell; 3 sons, Richard, Stephen, Gary Corkell; 9 grandchildren, little Ricky, Kerrie, Christina, Amber, Cassandra, little Steven, Christina, Jason, Ashley; 11 great-grandchildren, Kayla, Emma, Abigail, Kaleb, Kayleigh, Kaden, Lauren, Ava, Arabella, Alexander, Lilyanna.
