DENTON – As we turn the page on another year, Caroline County has something special to look forward to: the opening of a 50-year time capsule buried by students.
The capsule was the brainchild of Caroline County’s Council of Student Councils in 1976. While Caroline had already held a huge celebration for its own bicentennial in 1974, 1976 was the year of time capsules. Across the county, organizations, businesses, and even individuals buried everything from small boxes of letters and photographs to whole cars. The Council of Student Councils jumped on the bandwagon and officially asked the Caroline County Commissioners to bury a capsule on the courthouse green on March 9, 1976. The commissioners unanimously granted the students permission and agreed to attend the event, which was held on March 25 to duly commemorate Maryland Day.
Students belonging to the respective student councils of individual schools contributed items to the time capsule and it was planted on the green, where a plaque now marks its resting place. The plaque states that the capsule is to be opened half a century after it was first put in place, specifically March 25, 2026.
Planning is now underway as 2026 kicks off. An event to celebrate the opening of the time capsule is currently being finalized by Caroline County Public Schools staff under the direction of Communications Officer Sandi Barry. The Caroline Review will be following this story as the anticipation builds throughout the coming year.
