May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize that mental health is health and to take action to support the well-being of our communities. The Mental Health Association of Maryland (MHAMD) and the Maryland Department of Health’s Integrated Wellness and Prevention Office have partnered to spread this vital message.
You can show your support by joining the go-green movement during Mental Health Awareness Week (May 12th–18th) and Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (May 4th–10th). Light up your home, business, or community space in green—the color of mental health awareness. You can also wear green on May 8th to show solidarity and help reduce stigma. Learn more at mhamd.org/green.
Another meaningful way to get involved is by becoming a Champion for Children’s Mental Health. By signing up at childrensmentalhealthmatters.org, you’ll join a growing network of Marylanders advocating for the mental well-being of children and families across the state. Champions play a critical role in raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting access to resources. You can also get trained in Mental Health First Aid or QPR Suicide Prevention Training to support those in crisis.
Spreading awareness is another impactful way to contribute. Share resources like the 988 Lifeline, Maryland’s mental health county resources, and the Maryland Action Plan to Prevent Suicide in Schools (MAPS) with your network. Starting conversations about mental health with kindness and empathy can also make a significant difference. Simple questions like “How are you really feeling?” can open the door to meaningful dialogue and support.
