Rowdy

Posted

Rowdy has made himself comfortable here. Maybe a little too comfortable, if you ask us.

At seven years old, this sweet pittie mix has taken shelter life in stride. He doesn’t make a fuss. He isn’t demanding or difficult. He enjoys his walks, soaks up affection when it’s offered, gets along with most other dogs, and has done well with children.

He’s what we sometimes call an “easy dog.”

And strangely enough, being easy can sometimes make a shelter dog harder to see. When a dog is doing okay, there is no urgent story to tell. When he isn’t struggling in his kennel or desperately trying to get your attention, it can be easy to walk past and think, He’s fine.

And Rowdy is fine.

But “fine” isn’t the same thing as home.

A shelter can give Rowdy a warm bed, good meals, walks, affection and people who care deeply about him. What we cannot give him is the quiet familiarity of belonging to someone. A favorite spot on the couch. The sound of his person coming through the door. A sunny afternoon spent sleeping somewhere he knows he’ll wake up tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that.

At seven, Rowdy isn’t asking for a grand adventure. He’s ready for the comfortable part, the part where life settles into a rhythm and you have a good dog beside you for all of it.

The dogs who need us aren’t always the ones asking the loudest. Sometimes they’re simply waiting.

And Rowdy has waited long enough.
