Pet of the Week

Six Dogs. One Hope. Maryland 3000 Campaign.

Posted

Every day at the shelter begins much the same way.

The lights come on. Breakfast is served. Staff clip on leashes for morning walks, toys are handed out, and kennels begin to fill with wagging tails and hopeful eyes.

Some of those eyes belong to new arrivals, still trying to make sense of their surroundings. Others belong to dogs who have been there long enough to know the routine by heart. They know the sound of visitors walking through the kennels. They know the excitement when another dog leaves for a meet-and-greet. And they know the quiet that follows when that kennel doesn't fill back up because someone has finally found a home.

This week, instead of sharing the story of just one Pet of the Week, we want to introduce you to six.

Davey. Rocco. Roscoe. Hank. Pepe. Otis.

Six wonderful dogs with six very different personalities, but one thing in common, they've each been waiting far longer than they should have.

Over the past several months, we've watched these dogs grow in ways that have been nothing short of remarkable. Davey has blossomed from a timid dog into one who eagerly greets people at his kennel gate. Rocco continues to prove that life with a senior dog can be calm, comforting, and full of quiet companionship. Roscoe has thrived in foster care, showing everyone what a loving family dog he can be. Hank has patiently waited while continuing to learn and grow with every outing. Pepe reminds us every day that a little extra care can make all the difference, and Otis has spent the past several months discovering something many dogs take for granted, what it truly feels like to have a home.

Each one has made us laugh. Each one has made us proud. And each one has captured the hearts of our staff and volunteers. Yet every evening, they still return to the shelter or their foster home wondering when it will finally be their turn.

August brings with it a unique opportunity. Caroline County Humane Society is proud to be participating in the Maryland 3000 Adoption Challenge, a statewide effort to find homes for 3,000 shelter animals. Throughout the month, adoption fees are being waived to help remove one barrier between homeless pets and the families waiting to meet them.

If you've been thinking about adopting, we invite you to come meet Davey, Rocco, Roscoe, Hank, Pepe, and Otis. Spend a little time with them. Take them for a walk. Sit with them in the yard. You may discover that the dog you've been looking for has been waiting for you all along.

Our hope is that the next time we write about these six dogs, it won't be to tell you how long they've been waiting.

It will be to celebrate the homes they finally found.
