Dusky, Our Boy And Why We’re Telling His Story Again
In the story of any animal shelter, there are so many dogs that come and go. We hold them all in our hearts for as long as we have them, and then we lovingly send them off to their new families. But sometimes, there are the ones that linger. In our kennels and in our hearts.
Dusky is one of those dogs for the Caroline County Humane Society.
If you’ve been following us for a while, you may recognize his name. We’ve shared Dusky before. And we’re sharing him again for a reason.
Because he’s still here.
Things change quickly in the shelter, but one constant over the past almost two years has been the pensive, open, and patient face of our boy Dusky. Holidays, community events, the heat of summer and the chill of winter, he’s been here for it all. Including this weekend’s Slumber Pawty, which will be his second year joining us.
For those who may not know, our Slumber Pawty is a special overnight fundraiser where participants spend 24 hours in the kennel with a shelter dog, raising money, sharing their stories, and giving these dogs the spotlight they deserve. It’s one of our favorite events of the year.
But this year, for Dusky, it means something more.
Yes, we are raising funds. But one of our biggest hopes, the one we carry quietly but persistently, is that this is the moment someone sees him and realizes he’s been theirs all along.
We don’t know why Dusky has lingered. He’s a wonderful walking partner, a reliable companion for a long drive, and easily one of the most photogenic dogs we’ve ever had. As time passes, his perseverance and hope remain and we follow his lead.
He knows his people are on their way and we believe that too.
Until then, we will keep loving him. And reminding him, and all of you, just how deserving he is.
And maybe, just maybe, this will be the last Slumber Pawty he spends with us.
If you think Dusky might be your boy, please reach out to us at Caroline County Humane Society. We can’t wait to miss his precious face, knowing that he’s finally home where he belongs.
