Usually, Pet of the Week is all about one special dog but this week, we’re doing something a little different.
Through April 11, all of our adoptable dogs are part of our Zero Adoption Fee Promotion, and we couldn’t choose just one to spotlight. Each one is just as deserving, just as ready, and just waiting for their chance.
So, this week, we’re introducing you to all of them.
First on the roster is this little whirlwind.
They call him Twister, but don’t worry he’s the gentle kind. This one-year-old pit mix has a playful spirit and a soft heart, even if he can be a little shy or unsure when you first meet him. With a little patience (and snacks, he’s very food motivated), he quickly warms up and shows just how sweet and affectionate he really is. He’s at that perfect age where he’s ready to learn, grow, and bond with his person. If you’re looking for a dog to build a connection with, Twister might be your guy.
Next up we have Fortnite.
Fortnite may share a name with the game, but he’s not here for chaos—he’s here for comfort. This 2-year-old pit bull is a calm, easygoing dog who loves to explore at his own pace and take in the world around him. After overcoming a rough start, he’s ready for a soft place to land and a person he can count on. He’s treat motivated, knows his basics, and walks nicely on leash, making him an easy companion to have by your side. All he needs now is his one perfect teammate.
If you thought Fortnite was a silly name for a dog, please meet Cheeseburger!
With a name like Cheeseburger, you might expect big, bold energy but he’s more of a slow-and-steady kind of guy. This 2-year-old pit bull takes a little time to warm up, but once he does, you’ll see his soft, affectionate side come through in the sweetest ways. He enjoys calm companionship, gentle pets, and those quiet moments where he can just be close to his person. He’s still showing us more of his personality each day, especially when he’s out of his kennel and feeling comfortable. If you’re someone who understands that the best connections take time, Cheeseburger is absolutely worth it.
Next up is Ferret…. (Yes we like to have a little fun with their names)
Even though Ferret may have a funny name, it’s those ears that really steal the show. This 2-year-old pit bull is an easygoing, people-focused guy who enjoys the simple things like walks, car rides, and a good treat (or two). He’s done great on field trips, riding well in the car and walking nicely on leash, always happy to be by your side. Ferret is attentive, eager to learn, and settles in once he knows he’s with his person. If you’re looking for a steady companion with a little personality, Ferret is ready to meet you.
This next dog needs no introduction, Meet Dusky
If you’ve been following us for a while, you probably already know Dusky and there’s a reason for that. At 4 years old, he’s one of our longest residents, and somehow still waiting for the home he deserves. He’s the total package, handsome, affectionate, a little goofy, and always ready for a walk, a car ride, or just time with his people. He’s treat-motivated, knows his basics, and has a gentle, easygoing nature that staff and volunteers adore. Dusky is looking to be your one and only pet, but in return, he’ll give you everything he has.
Dusky isn’t our only longterm resident unfortunately, meet his neighbor Davey
Davey has been waiting longer than he should have and he’s more than ready for his chance. At 4 years old, he’s a playful, strong, and affectionate dog who loves running in the yard, chasing a ball, and being close to his people. He can be a little unsure at first and does best with calm, patient introductions, but once he trusts you, his sweet and loyal personality really shines. He enjoys structure, knows his basics, and settles into a steady, loving companion. Davey just needs someone willing to meet him where he is and give him the chance he’s been waiting for.
Our next dog Rocco finishes the trio of our longest term residents.
Rocco has been through more than most, but you’d never know it by the way he carries himself. At 7 years old, he’s confident, resilient, and still full of life, happy to play, go for walks, and then settle in for some quiet time with his person. He’s easy on leash, enjoys attention, and has a fun, slightly goofy personality that makes him hard not to love. He’s past the puppy chaos but still has plenty of spark, making him a great balance for someone looking for both companionship and personality. Rocco is ready for a home where he can finally relax and just be someone’s dog
Lets switch it up a bit and introduce you to our only female dog currently available, Meet Bloom
Bloom is a 2-year-old pit mix who is still learning that the world can be kind again. She came to us unsure and a little scared, but every day she’s growing more confident and letting her sweet, playful personality shine through. Outside of her kennel, she’s all sunshine, easy to walk, full of gentle affection, and always ready to lean in for a cuddle. She’s lived with other dogs before and greets them with calm curiosity, making her a great candidate for a meet and greet. Bloom just needs someone patient who will give her the time and space to fully come into her own.
Next up is Tony, a charismatic all around good boy.
Tony is one of those dogs you meet and instantly understand why everyone loves him. At 4 years old, he’s calm, friendly, and full of that easy charm that makes him a joy to be around. He loves attention, lives for belly rubs, and has a relaxed, happy-go-lucky personality that makes everything feel a little lighter. He walks great on leash, is treat motivated, and settles in quickly with new people. Tony isn’t complicated, he's just a really, really good dog.
This list wouldn’t be complete without our boy Axel,
Axel is the kind of dog who just makes life feel easier. At 7 years old, this Lab/Shepherd mix is calm, affectionate, and perfectly content to be by your side through it all. He’s done well with dogs, cats, and children, and carries himself with a gentle, easygoing nature that makes him a great fit for almost any home. Whether he’s out for a walk or relaxing at your feet, Axel is simply happy to be part of your world. He’s not looking for anything complicated, just a place to belong.
If one of these dogs feels like yours, we encourage you to come meet them, apply on our website, or contact our adoption team at adoptions@carolinehumane.org or 410-820-1600. They’re ready… now they just need someone to choose them.
