Not about the catch

Fathers cast their lines with nostalgia

There’s a song by Trace Adkins about fishin’ that represents how the act of fishing is often not about the catch at all, but about the time spent outdoors making memories.

Three of Denton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center’s residents were able to enjoy this kind of carefree, nostalgic fishing during a morning trip to the banks of the Choptank River on Friday, June 13, just in time to kick off Father’s Day weekend.

Denton Nursing and Rehab’s Activities Director, Abigail, said they like to give their residents the opportunity to do the things they enjoyed doing before entering the facility’s care. She also pointed out that Delmarva Community Transit is always happy to provide their residents a lift, “that’s just one more thing they do for the community.”

Ashley, Denton Nursing and Rehab’s Admissions Coordinator, said this is the second year that they have organized a fishing trip at the Wharves of Choptank Visitor’s Center for Father’s Day. “As soon as they got off the bus they went right to the water,” she said.

Richard Howard is a resident of Denton Nursing and Rehab. He said he’s always liked to fish, “It gives you a chance to reflect and slow things down. Seize the moment a little bit.”

Another resident, Howard Gregory, is 90 years old. A farm boy turned construction worker, he found his way to the Eastern Shore of Maryland from Virginia. He said, “I’m glad to get out here to fish today. I love to fish… I could fish every day.” While he was dreaming of catching a “big cat”, he was happy just to be sitting by the water with a pole in his hand as he did in his youth. You couldn’t wipe the smile off his face if you tried.
