Michael Carlton Porter, age 71, of Greensboro departed this life December 14, 2025, at home. Mike was born December 3, 1954, to the late Carlton H. Porter and the late Kathleen B. Porter.
Mike graduated in 1973 from North Caroline High School. While in high school he played trombone in the band and performed in school plays. He graduated from Salisbury University in 1977 with a B.A. in Liberal Studies. He was a member of the college band and active in the college theater. He later returned to Salisbury University and earned a second degree in Communications in 1984.
Mike worked at Saulsbury Brothers in the summers while he was in high school. While in college he interned in the office of State Senator John A. Cade. After graduation from college, Mike worked at the Power Plant in Baltimore, at the Rose’s store in Chestertown, for Delmarva Data, and for the Benedictine School as a classroom assistant and then in one of the cottages. For a time he was a member of the Roman Catholic Order of St. John of God in New Jersey; Momence, Illinois; Dublin, Ireland; Albuquerque; and Toronto.
Mike was a lifetime member of St. Benedict-St Elizabeth Parish of the Roman Catholic Church. He sang in the church choir and was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Parish’s St. Joan of Arc Council of the Knights of Columbus. He regularly assisted in vegetable and flower sales fundraisers, collections of foods for the poor, funnel cake sales at the Strawberry Festival, and roast beef sandwich sales at Summerfest.
Mike retained his interest in performance arts throughout his life. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of movies and television shows, and often won movie tickets in radio station movie trivia contests. He often attended performances at Salisbury University and interacted with period actors at the Renaissance Festival.
Mike is survived by a sister, Mary Ann Palmer (Walt) of Denton; an uncle, Arthur Porter, of Denton; an aunt, Leona Porter, of Denton; seven cousins; and three step-cousins. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his uncle Richard Porter, his aunt Alberta Porter Weer Gelletly, his aunt Eleanor Richards, his Uncle Charles Richards, his aunt Ruth Porter, his uncle Alton R. “Dutch” Brubaker, his aunt Ruby Brubaker, and his cousin Dale Brubaker.
Memorial Mass will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 20, at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church in Ridgely. A visitation for Mike will be Friday, December 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro, Maryland. Burial will be private.
