Mary Jo Shaffer

Mary Jo Shaffer of Denton, MD, passed away at her home on Monday, October 5, 2026. She was 87 years old.

Born in Mt. Ida, Arkansas, Mrs. Shaffer was the daughter of the late Vernon Jack Phillips and Clara Louise Cranfield. She was proceeded in death by her husband, W. Martin “Marty” Shaffer, on November 3, 1999, and her daughter, Dana Jo Shaffer, on November 3, 2021.

Mrs. Shaffer was a 1957 graduate of Caroline High School in Denton. In the 1970s, she served on the Caroline County Board of Education and was also a past member of the Caroline Country Club and the Denton Women’s Club. She was an avid sports fan and proudly embraced her role as a “Sports Mom” when her children were young. She also enjoyed traveling and “antique-ing.” Above all, Mary Jo treasured her family and took great joy in being a grandmother.

Mrs. Shaffer is survived by her son, Dale W. Shaffer (Regina) of Denton; son-in-law, Christopher Felton of Denton; three brothers: Mark Cranfield (Louise) of Denton, Gary Cranfield (Terri O’Hare) of Dover, AR, and Bob Phillips (Peggy) of Ocala, FL; two sisters, Rebecca Campbell (Len) of Ocala, FL and Jane Wright of Talladega, AL; six grandchildren: Katie Knox (C.C. Capranica), Andy Knox (Jackie), Alyssa Farwell (Ben), Jordan Shaffer, Carissa Lynch, and Zoe Breeding; and three great-grandchildren: Parker Norfolk, Braylon Knox, and Brettson Knox.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 12 at Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 South Second Street in Denton where friends may visit from 10 to 11 prior to the service. The interment will follow at Denton Cemetery.
