Check out all the events listed below that are offered at the parks this month. Plenty of nature programs and activities that are free or low cost.
Caroline Cycles: Enjoy the beautiful Caroline County countryside on Saturday May 10, at 9 AM by cycling 20 miles. The ride leaves from the Greensboro Library, 101 Cedar Lane Greensboro, MD. You must be 18 years old and helmets are required. Lights, water, and bright colored clothing is recommended.
Evening Cycle: Meet every week at 5:30 PM for a 10 - 15 mile bike ride at either Tuckahoe or Martinak State Park. This ride is open to those who ride 10 mph and designed for cyclists new to road riding. A leader stays in front to guide the group and one experienced rider stays behind the last rider. Meet up points are at major intersections and/or the halfway mark. This is a social group of riders, so come have some fun. Helmet and water are required. Tubes, lights, and tools are recommended. The rides leave from Martinak State Park Office on Thursday May 8 and 27. Rides leave from Tuckahoe State Park Lake Parking Area on Thursday May 1, 15, and 29.
Martinak Morning Walk: Meet at the Martinak State Park Office at 10:30 AM, on Tuesdays and Thursdays for a guided walk on a paved trail. Walks are approximately 1.5 miles in length or about 3,000 steps with plenty of benches available for resting and enjoying nature. Others may choose to walk longer through the camp loops and trails for 3 miles.
First Saturday Guided Walk: Discover native habitats as you walk at Adkins Arboretum on the first Saturday of every month at 10:00 AM. To register, call 410-634-2847.
Healing Walk: A walk on Friday, May 2, at 10:00 AM at Adkins Arboretum is designed for those who are suffering from a loss, traumatic experience, or the demands of caretaking. Nature has the power to soothe and restore.
We’ll take a leisurely stroll along our paths while listening, sharing, or simply soaking in the silence. To register, call 410-634-2847.
Spring Migration Bird Walk: Experience the wonders of Spring migration! These guided walks explore various habitats, allowing participants to observe the diverse bird species passing through the area. This walk is suitable for birders of all experience levels. Meets at Adkins Arboretum every Saturday in April at 8:00 AM. To register, call 410-634-2847.
Biodiversity Walk: Learn about and observe the natural ecosystems of Maryland’s Coastal Plain on an expert–led walk, identifying as many species as possible along the way! Join this walk at Adkins Arboretum on Sunday May 11 and 25, at 1:00 PM. To register, call 410-634-2847.
Pride Nature Walk: Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 10 AM, at Adkins Arboretum, LGBTQ+ adults, teens, parents, and allies are invited to participate in a monthly guided walk to explore the Arboretum’s rich native plant habitats. A representative from the Delmarva Pride Center will facilitate these supportive group walks. Adkins Arboretum is proud to provide a beautiful, inclusive, and welcoming space. Pride Nature Walks begin at the Visitor’s Center and last about an hour. Please dress for the weather. Call 410-634-2847 to register
Kayak Meetup: Bring your kayak and meet others to paddle Watts Creek on Tuesday May 27, at 6 PM, at Martinak State Park boat ramp. Lifejackets are required. Water and bug spray are recommended.
Boathouse: The boathouse is open every Saturday and Sunday this summer, from 10 - 6 PM at Tuckahoe State Park Lake. Kayaks and canoes are available to rent for the hour or day.
Spring Hiking Trip: The Wednesday Winter Hikers have planned a spring trip to Valley Forge, PA area to visit historical parks and state parks. Five mile hikes are planned for each day. The trip is scheduled for May 18, 19, and 20. For more information or to join the group for the trip call or text 410-924-1529.
Slow Birding: Slow birding is easily defined as sitting or standing in one place for extended periods of time and paying close attention to the birds that are around you and those that come in to observe you. Join Jim Wilson on the bridge at Adkins Arboretum on Thursdays at 5:30 PM, to enjoy a relaxing evening listening to and observing the birds. Parents are encouraged to bring their children that have an interest in birds and that can stay stationary for longer periods of time. To register, call 410-634-2847.
Native Plant Cafe: Celebrate the benefits and beauty of native plants at an inspiration-filled morning at Adkins Arboretum on Saturday May 10, from 9 - 11 AM. Shop a beautiful array of native plants in-person, chat with fellow plant people, savor fresh coffee and pastries, and attend expert-led talks and demonstrations. Learn from plant experts how natives can enhance your home garden while supporting biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Then, take a relaxing stroll on the trails to view thriving native plants in their natural habitats. Call 410-634-2847 to register.
Plant Swap: On Tuesday May 2, from 4 - 6 PM, at Martinak State Park Nature Center, bring a plant to swap and learn about the benefits of native plants while relaxing with a glass of ice tea.
Friends of Tuckahoe and Martinak Concert: There will be free live music at Martinak State Park Amphitheater on Saturday May 24, at 6 PM. Bring a picnic and enjoy the evening at the park.
Friends of Tuckahoe and Martinak Book Bingo: Bingo at the Martinak State Park Nature Center will be held on Saturday May 24, at 2 PM. It’s $1.00 a card and the winner chooses a book.
Nature Center Fun: Come join the fun at the Martinak Nature Center on Saturdays, from 9 to 5 PM. Explore the critters, crafts displays and more!
