Local Grant Provides Down Payment Assistance

Posted

The Mid-Shore LOVE Down Payment Grant is for buyers in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne or Talbot Counties. To qualify, applicants must work in one of those counties and meet income and credit score requirements. Applicants do not need to be a first-time home buyer to qualify.

Megan Rosendale, a realtor with Rosendale Realty with an office in Denton, created the grant to encourage people who work in mid-shore counties to purchase homes and live near their work. It is privately funded with monies raised through fun events like golf tournaments, country club gatherings, and casino nights. “The recipient can use the $1,000 grant to help with the downpayment or to buy paint, a new appliances, carpeting, etc.,” Ms. Rosendale explained.

Jennifer Woessner bought a home in Federalsburg, and she says “we put the money towards our closing costs which was a tremendous help. With the economy the way it is and the interest rates, it brought down the cost of the mortgage. It was definitely a big help; it was easy and fast and very beneficial to us.”

Alex Eaton of Caroline County talked about his experience in being awarded the LOVE grant. “It may not seem like a lot of money, but we bought a fixer-upper and every little bit helps! We were very happy with the program.” Another Caroline County recipient, George Thomas, said “I used it towards the downpayment on the house I got. It helped me a lot.”

Grant applications are found at midshoreboardofrealtors.com. There are also several home buying classes on the website. LOVE Down Payment Grant tax deductible donations can also be made through the Mid-Shore Community Foundation at https://www.mscf.org/.
