James "Jim" Dyer of Federalsburg, a cherished educator, devoted community member, and beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, departed this life on September 25, 2026 at the Manor House in Seaford, DE at the age of 90. Born on September 18, 1936, in Richwood, West Virginia James touched the hearts and lives of many throughout his remarkable journey.

He was married to Miriam Butcher Dyer on June 2, 1958. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2024 after 66 years of marriage.

Jim graduated from Richwood High School. He then attended Glenville State University in West Virginia and received his Bachelor's degree in education. He received his Master's degree in administration at Western Maryland College. He was a dedicated advocate for education, beginning his career at Carroll County Public Schools, where he first inspired young minds as a teacher and later fulfilled his calling as the assistant principal. His unwavering commitment to student success continued to flourish in Federalsburg, where he served as the principal of Colonel Richardson High School from 1967 to 1979. Following his tenure as principal, he took on the role of supervisor of instruction, leaving an indelible mark until his retirement in 1991.

An active member of Christ Church in Federalsburg, Jim exemplified service and community spirit, holding positions as treasurer and trustee. His faith guided him, instilling a sense of purpose and community that resonated deeply with those around him.

Outside of his professional life, Jim enjoyed the simple pleasures: golfing, rooting for the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles, and spending time with family. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for boating and crabbing, where he found joy and tranquility. A native of West Virginia, he loved traveling and he relished opportunities to return to his roots, gathering with family and friends to share laughter and create lasting memories.

James is survived by two children Patrick Dyer and his wife Beverly of Federalsburg and Jennifer Baker and her husband Douglas of Willards; four grandchildren: Rachel Breeding and her husband Travis, Taylor Sturgill and her husband Jonathan, Colin Baker and Conner Baker; and six great grandchildren: Trenton, Trace, Rilyn, Holly, Hayven and Alice.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by seven siblings: Paul Dyer, Hazel Nevling, Pearl Dyer, Audrey McClung, Mabel Hutchinson, Dorothy Kobrin and Rose Elmer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Colonel Richardson High School, Attn. Wendy Duvall, 25320 Richardson Road, Federalsburg, MD 21632, embodying his passion for teaching and commitment to empowering future generations.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 5, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Framptom Funeral Home in Fedealsburg. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 1:00 prior to the service.
