DENTON – The Caroline County Health Department is taking a different approach to teaching safe swimming this summer – an online, kid-centered monthly art contest.
The contest is based on the National Drowning Prevention Alliance’s Five Layers of Protection. Each month, the Caroline County Health Department encourages kids and teens to make art from any media based on one of the Five Layers of Protection. July’s theme - and Layer - is lifejackets.
Once the artwork is finished, participants (or their parents) can submit for a chance to win a $100 Walmart gift card via the Caroline County Health Department’s Facebook page by commenting on the pinned post. One $1,500 gift card to Sun Outdoors will be offered as a grand prize to a random participant after the contest concludes.
“Our goal is to really spread the word and awareness about water safety,” said Caroline County Health Department’s Director of Nursing, Holly Trice, “[as] drowning is the leading cause of child death for ages one through four.”
The Five Layers of Protection include barriers and alarms, supervision, water competency, life jackets, and emergency preparedness.
