Habitat for Humanity Choptank Breaks Ground on Housing Community in Denton

Posted

DENTON – On October 20, Habitat for Humanity Choptank officially broke ground on a new six-home neighborhood in the heart of Denton as part of their longtime mission to expand affordable housing opportunities in Caroline County.

The groundbreaking brought together town officials, nonprofit partners, potential volunteers, prospective Habitat homebuyers, and community members to learn more about the project and Habitat Choptank’s plans for Denton.

Habitat Choptank was approved by Habitat for Humanity International to expand its service area into Caroline and Queen Anne’s counties on July 1, following the dissolution of Habitat Tuckahoe. The properties on Gay Street were deeded to Habitat Choptank by Habitat Tuckahoe before the affiliate dissolved.

Now, the first two homes are under construction and are expected to be completed by September 2027, with the remaining four homes scheduled for construction throughout 2027 and 2028.

“We were thrilled with the show of support for the work we are doing in Denton,” said Habitat Choptank’s Chief Development Officer, Jenny Schmidt, “the median household income is $68,457 while the median purchase price for a home is $290,000, making it difficult for low-income earners to purchase a home. Our proposed Gay Street neighborhood is needed, and we are committed to helping to meet that need.”
