GREENSBORO – Renovations are now taking place at what will be the new Greensboro Historical Society Museum, located at 609 W. Sunset Avenue, just down the road from their current abode. But the process is slow-going, and Historical Society members are dreading the financial toll of their uprooting.
“With a move of this magnitude, nothing goes smoothly,” said GHS President Bob Moser, “We are limited by renovations to the new location, and storage of items to be moved.”
GHS’s largest fundraiser just took place on Friday, September 21. The 22nd Annual Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament thankfully turned a profit, which will go towards “rent, utilities, internet, security, and other items that may arise.” Moser said it’s important to keep in mind that “these are items that we did not have to pay for the last seven years.”
The GHS was previously housed in a town-owned building, but they were asked to move due to the town needing the space. The Greensboro Town Council gave the GHS until October 5, 2025, to move out of the current museum, but the town “has provided a temporary storage area in the interim” to store the Historical Society’s belongings while they wait for work on their new building to be finished. “We are grateful to the Town of Greensboro for the past & present support,” Moser said.
GHS is still in need of more help in the form of finances and physical labor. “We are currently discussing additional fundraising events in the near future. Volunteers for assisting with the move are current membership, family & friends. Articles like this and word of mouth would be, and should be helpful in getting more help,” Moser said. He added that “The future of the Historical Society is strong and ever present. We are planning on a grand opening around the upcoming holidays.”
