Greensboro shooting suspect charged with attempted murder

DENTON – A Glen Burnie man has been charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder following a Feb. 12 incident at the Sav A Lot grocery store in Greensboro.

Originally charged with several offenses, Jeffery Joseph Smith Sr., 47, is being held without bond at the Caroline County Detention Center in Denton.

Represented by a public defender, Smith appeared before the Caroline County Circuit Court Feb. 26.

On Feb. 24, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office arrested Smith and charged him with multiple offenses: first-degree assault, second-degree assault, possession of a handgun in a vehicle, possession of a loaded handgun in a vehicle and reckless endangerment.

Smith also was charged with four additional charges related to firearm possession.

A preliminary hearing is set for March 25 in Caroline County Circuit Court.

At about 3:40 p.m. Feb. 12, deputies with the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office and the Greensboro Police Department responded to a reported shooting in the parking lot of Save A Lot grocery store, 13263 Greensboro Road. No one was injured in the incident.

Smith was identified in surveillance footage shooting at someone who was fleeing the scene.

Following his arrest, Smith was presented before the Caroline County District Court Commissioner for his initial hearing and was subsequently remanded to the Caroline County Detention Center without the option for bond.
