FEDERALSBURG – The town of Federalsburg continues to experience staffing changes, and a council vacancy was filled six weeks into the new calendar year.

The town council workshop was held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Mayor and Council Meeting Room, 118 N. Main. St.

Mercedes Moyer, who is also the grants writer, planning and zoning administrator, and code enforcement and permitting administrator, was announced as the interim town manager and acting town treasurer.

Former Town Manager Kristy Marshall resigned but was asked to stay on for a month to help with the transition to a new town manager. Town Treasurer Debbie Lawler was laid off.

The town webpage listed the full-time town treasurer position at a salary of $48,000 to $52,000, depending on experience, with benefits. The deadline for applying was Feb. 19.

Former Federalsburg Police Chief Michael McDermott of the Federalsburg Police Department resigned Jan. 5. His position was filled by FPD Lt. Joseph Gasser as chief Jan. 6.

Ian Ferguson of Buena Vista Avenue was elected by the council to fill the District 2 seat vacated by Council President Pro Tem Torbert Williamson II, who resigned from the board because he moved out of town.

“There's a lot of work that needs to get done,” Ferguson said. “I threw my hat in the ring to represent the town. I've only been here for five years. I'm from Easton originally, but there's a lot of things that this town could benefit from, having a fresh set of eyes like myself.”

Ferguson was one of a few residents who submitted an interest form expressing their desire to serve on the council.

Two vacancies still exist on the ethics committee.

Concerns about accounts oversight and adherence to the town charter’s requirements for filling vacancies on the town council were raised by council members.

Council Member Brandy James reminded the council that her colleagues were elected by districts but affirmed that they would uphold the town charter and represent the entire town.
