Magnificent May

Posted

Congratulations—you made it through April’s whiplash weather. What a start to the planting season! Hopefully, by now you have vegetables in the ground and rows of cool-weather greens thriving. But May belongs to the flowers.
Move over crocuses, daffodils, tulips and forsythia—your rivals are arriving. We’ve appreciated your hardy persistence, pushing slender green shoots through last fall’s leaves and even braving that late-season snowstorm to usher in longer, brighter days.
Now, it’s time for lily of the valley, lilacs, peonies, salvia, impatiens and dianthus to take center stage. Petunias and geraniums can go in as azaleas and rhododendrons reach peak bloom. If your mandevilla has made it through the winter, it will soon be encouraged by jasmine and clematis vines beginning to show their color. This steady parade of blossoms makes it much easier to leave winter behind.
As your garden comes into its own this month and edges toward the warm days of summer, you can also enjoy spring’s bounty on display at the Garden Club’s Flower Show, “Through the Garden Gate.” The show will feature creative floral arrangements and a variety of horticultural specimens from club members.
Visitors are invited to spend the afternoon, meet members and cast a vote for the “People’s Choice Award.” A special design class, themed “America The Beautiful - Celebrating 250 Years” is also open to anyone interested in submitting a floral arrangement.
The show will be held at the Denton Library on Friday, May 8. Admission is free, and hours are 1 to 4 p.m. For more information about the design class or other details, please call 410-253-9540 or email us at ccgardenclubinfo@gmail.com. FB carolinecountygardenclub-maryland
