Dig In with the Caroline County Garden Club

Putting Down New Roots in the New Year

Posted

Welcome to 2026! A new year is a good time to explore new opportunities, and if you have been thinking about “growing” your circle of friends, “branching out” and learning new things, or “harvesting” new experiences might we suggest you consider joining the Caroline County Garden Club?

This year will mark the club’s 69th anniversary and we have a calendar that is fast filling up with opportunities to learn from experts like Mikaela Boley, Katie Barney, and Susie Middleton. Mikaela is a Master Gardener with Queen Anne’s County and will be the guest speaker at our January 9th meeting, giving a presentation on landscaping. On February 13th we will be joined by cookbook and travel author/lecturer Katie Barney, who will share how to grow herbs and incorporate them into recipes. On April 10th, Susie Middleton, a Past President of Federated Garden Clubs MD District 1 and designer extraordinaire, will share her skills with floral design demonstrations. Each of these meetings will take place at the Wharves of Choptank Visitor Center in Denton, at 10 AM.

We have plans to hit the road both near and far in 2026, with a field trip to Clayton Farms in Denton, a trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show for a behind-the-scenes tour, and a trip to Washington, DC to visit Art in Bloom DC. We are also working on putting a bus trip together to another destination…details to follow!

After the success of our Harvesting Autumn’s Gems Flower Show in October of 2024, we are going to turn the spotlight on spring gardens with “Through the Garden Gate,” a flower show planned for May 8th. The show will include floral designs and horticulture exhibits which will be judged by accredited Federated Garden Club judges, as well as by the general public with the popular People’s Choice awards.

In between the meetings and trips, the club will be busy with other activities including educational outreach programs with area youth and seniors, all the while looking for ways to further expand on the club’s mission of educating the public on all things gardening and preserving the natural beauty of the Green Garden county. We will also be conducting fundraisers designed to fund our college scholarship program that awards a scholarship to a college bound senior from each of our county high schools.

If you think the Caroline County Garden Club is something you want to “dig in” to, we invite you to reach out to learn more about the club.
