DENTON – The Maryland Municipal League named Karen Monteith its 2025 Employee of the Year at the association’s summer conference June 22-25 in Ocean City.

Monteith is the clerk-treasurer and director of finance for the town of Denton.   MML President Michael O'Connor and Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller presented the award in a June 24 ceremony at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center.

At its July 3 meeting, the Denton Town Council recognized Monteith with a council citation.

Councilman Frank Taylor said her MML award presentation was “without a doubt, the highlight of the conference. … (and) very, very well-deserved.”

Monteith has served as the clerk-treasurer for the town of Denton since 1996, managing financial accounts, legal records, human resources and more.

“Karen consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the Town’s records are in order,” according to a July 3 press release by the town of Denton. “Her passion for financial stability is evident in everything she does, inspiring those around her to strive for excellence. Her influence extends beyond the workplace, positively impacting Denton and all of Caroline County.”

“The Town Council and staff congratulate her on this most prestigious honor,” the release stated.

Along with Taylor and Monteith, Mayor Abigail McNinch, Town Administrator Scott Getchell and Denton Police Chief George Bacorn attended the conference.

“The town of Denton was very well represented,” Taylor said.

McNinch, along with Caroline County Commission President Travis Breeding, presented a session titled “The Path to Stronger Municipal-County Relations.” McNinch was elected to the MML Executive Board and will serve as co-chair of the Legislative Committee.

Bacorn also was elected to the MML Executive Board. He presided over the Police Executives breakfast and will chair that committee, “which is a wonderful thing for us,” Taylor said.

Founded in 1936, MML represents four special taxing districts and all of Maryland's 157 incorporated cities and towns. The MML is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan association controlled and maintained by city and town governments.
