DENTON – In August of 2025, the idea for a girls flag football league in Denton was bouncing around in the head of Keyana Hill. The first place Hill could think of to go for more information on how to get such a program started was the Denton Town Council. Since then, the Denton Dolphins Flag Football team was created, and it has only grown in reach.
Hill and one of her players, Tamia Thomas, along with several parents and supporters, attended the Denton Town Council meeting on February 5, 2026. They came to thank the Council for their guidance in those early planning stages. The program currently has about 25 girls, and Hill stated they were hosting try-outs soon for their second season.
The Town directed Hill to Sharp Road Park and connected her with other coaches and contacts that utilized the park. The Denton Dolphins were able to host their first flag football camp there that September, and by November they were traveling to other states to play in tournaments.
“The Baltimore Ravens invited us to their Thanksgiving Day game to celebrate the girls on getting started with girls flag football, because it is a growing sport, and it will be a part of the 2028 Olympics,” Hill said. The team has been involved in more tournaments since and have even partnered with a program in Crofton to start their own league, which will allow the Dolphins to host home games at Sharp Road Park. “People are shocked and surprised that we’re from the Eastern Shore,” Hill said.
Thomas spoke of her personal experiences as a flag footballer in front of the Council. Being on the Denton Dolphins “shows us different types of sisterhood and love and care,” Thomas said, “The coaches…they build us up when we're down.” She said the support she has seen from those in Denton and Caroline County “shows us that we're not just by ourselves, we have a whole entire community behind us.”
“All these opportunities came from the town giving us the first point of contact. We are proud to wear ‘Denton’ across our jerseys,” Hill said. Denton Mayor Dr. Abigail McNinch said the Sharp Road Park project has been “an if-you-build-it-they-will-come” situation, and she was glad the Denton Dolphins came to update the Council on the team.
