DENTON — A new tax credit for active volunteer firefighters in Caroline County will take effect on January 24, 2026, as it was passed by a unanimous vote of the County Commissioners during their December 9 meeting.
To be eligible to receive the tax credit, a person must be a member of one of the eight independent volunteer fire companies in the county and have maintained active service status as determined by Caroline County Fire and EMS Association for at least three consecutive calendar years, beginning January 1, 2022. “There is an application process and a verification process, which is in the bill to make sure that the credit is only given to active duty volunteer firefighters,” said the county’s attorney, Stewart Barroll.
The credit will give $250 against Caroline County property taxes in 2026 and will increase by $50 each year until the tax credit amounts to $500.
