DENTON – As the sun set on August 19, leaders and congregants from several local churches gathered on the Caroline County courthouse steps for a prayer service ahead of the annual Summerfest event, scheduled for August 21 and 22. The brief service brought together representatives from Abram Memorial Church, Greater Impact Church, Eternal Life Ministries, St. Luke’s Methodist Church, Ames Church, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church to pray for the festival’s safety and success.
They began with the group of about three dozen meeting at St. Luke’s on 5th Avenue in Denton and marching together to the courthouse while singing hymns. Several pastors prayed over the same area Summerfest will take place.
The gathering closed with the Lord’s Prayer and a benediction, urging the respective church-goers to “shine like a beacon of light” during Summerfest. Pastor Doug Morely of Greater Impact church in Greensboro said that since they started having this prayer event, Summerfest has not seen any major safety issues – a tradition they pray continues this weekend.
