Caroline Foundation Spotlight: Angels in Service

Posted

Angels in Service is a small, homegrown effort to fill a critical gap in Caroline County’s overall health and wellness. Founded by retired community health worker Wanda Molock, the small volunteer group provides free rides to medical appointments for locals who otherwise have no way to get there. The organization of four volunteers received Caroline Foundation funding last November to help cover gas and maintenance-related expenses, as they use their own vehicles to transport those in need.

Molock said the idea grew out of a chance meeting with a woman at a bus stop. She had just finished dialysis and told Molock she felt unwell. She was just waiting for the bus to take her home. Molock offered to drive the woman home herself, and that became the first of many such rides.

Molock brought the idea of providing this service to her church and friends, and they eventually started Angels in Service. In addition to Molock, Angels in Service’s drivers are Janet Fountain, Jessica Pinkett, and Elaine Hubbard.

The group primarily serves senior citizens, disadvantaged residents, and people who don’t meet income or eligibility requirements for county transportation programs. Riders are taken to doctor’s offices, specialists, pharmacies, and wellness appointments in and around Denton, Easton, Federalsburg, Goldsboro, Cambridge, Salisbury, Grasonville, and even into Delaware or across the bridge when needed. Molock said she receives calls from other local organizations such as His Hope Ministries, Choptank Community Health, the University of Maryland Medical System, the Caroline County Health Department, and social services to provide rides for their clients.

“Being in a rural area… I know that what we do makes a big difference in the health and wellness for people,” Molock said. Their mission to ensure locals keep up with their medical appointments fits perfectly into the Caroline Foundation’s mission to support the health of Caroline County residents.
