Choptank Community Health System, Inc. recently received grant funding from the Caroline Foundation to support a new technology initiative aimed at enhancing clinical documentation and the patient care experience
Choptank Community Health System is a federally qualified health center that “provides access to quality health care through the delivery of comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health care services in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Talbot and Queen Anne's Counties on Maryland's Eastern Shore,” said Sara Rich, President & Chief Executive Officer.
Choptank was incorporated in 1978 and “opened the first primary care office in Caroline County in July 1980” under the name Caroline Health Services. In 1999, the organization merged with Fassett Magee Health Center in Cambridge and changed the name to Choptank Community Health.
Choptank has since grown to include seven medical centers, five dental centers, multiple school-based health centers, and a migrant health program. According to Rich, the mission is “to provide access to exceptional, comprehensive and integrated health care for all,” and its vision is “to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve; to provide an outstanding care experience; and to be an exceptional place to work and make a difference.”
Grant monies from the Caroline Foundation will be used to purchase technology to support a new project at Choptank called AI Scribing for Care Excellence: Boosting Provider Satisfaction and Patient Experience. “This project aims to enhance the patient care experience and clinical documentation…by using artificial intelligence in our electronic health record system,” Rich explained. Funding will support the implementation of “CarePilot,” a new feature available in Athena, the electronic record system used by Choptank.
Rich said the key benefits of using CarePilot include “reductions in administrative time for clinical documentation, and enhanced patient interactions”
