DENTON – Each year in mid-March, organizations across the county observe Sunshine Week. According to the initiative’s official website, Sunshine Week is “a nonpartisan collaboration among groups in the journalism, civic, education, government and private sectors that shines a light on the importance of public records and open government.” At their March 17 meeting, the Caroline County Commissioners issued a proclamation in partnership with Caroline Review and Caroline Review.News publisher Debbie Bowden declaring the week of March 15 through March 21, 2026, Sunshine Week in Caroline County.
“Every citizen in our participatory democracy has an inherent right to access government meetings and public records,” read Commissioner Larry Porter, “an open and accessible government is vital to establishing and maintaining the people's trust and confidence in their government.” He continued, “the protection of every person's right of access to public records and government meetings is a high priority of Caroline County Commissioners, and the Caroline County Commissioners are committed to openness and transparency in all aspects of their operations, and seek to set a standard in this regard.”
Bowden said, “Since I took on the role of providing free, accessible news to the community, the government here for Caroline County has been a pleasure to work with…it just makes the job of reporting the news and sharing that with the citizens a lot easier. So, I want to thank you for having that culture and having the staff in place to make sure that that gets done and people can know what's going on.”
“We were definitely lacking in a reliable new source to get information out to the citizens,” said Commission President Travis Breeding, So the service that that you've taken on by going more to the news items, I think is has really helped to inform the citizens of the county of what's going on, and it helps us get feedback from them.”
