Caroline County Buries 50-Year Time Capsule - Again!

Posted

DENTON – Since the North Caroline and Colonel Richardson Class of 1976 time capsule was opened in March of this year, the hole its absence left in the Courthouse green has remained empty – until now. Another time capsule, this one including memories from all Caroline County Public Schools and various community members, was buried in its place on September 17, 2026, in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. This capsule is slated to be opened on the country’s next major anniversary in 2076.

A small ceremony was held by partners including Caroline County Public Schools, the Caroline County Government, and the Caroline County 250 Commission, to commemorate the occasion. While the original capsule was buried and resurrected on Maryland Day in March, this capsule was buried on Constitution Day, a decision made by the local students involved in the project. “Constitution Day represents the day in 1787 when delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution, more than 11 years after independence,” explained Bob Zimberoff, Caroline’s Director of Economic Development and Tourism and leader of the Caroline County 250 Commission, “Though we celebrate July 4, 1776 as the nation’s founding, it was the Constitution, as imperfect as it was and is today, that truly created the United States government. By honoring both the past and the future, I’m thrilled to participate in today’s celebration and burying of a time capsule.”

North Caroline student Oliver “Olive” Butler later described the capsule as “a snapshot of who we are, our values, and the choices we make,” meant to inspire those who open it 50 years from now. The ceremony also included a performance of the national anthem by Ellie Mills of Colonel Richardson High School.
