Caroline County Board of Education Chooses NCHS Site for New Middle School Build

DENTON — The Caroline County Board of Education unanimously voted to select the North Caroline High School site as the location for the new Lockerman Middle School at their August 5 Board meeting.

The decision came one month after the feasibility study done by the Lockerman project team was presented to the Board. The study concluded that the North Caroline high school site would be the better option, as opposed to a plot of county-owned land on Double Hills Road behind the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office.

The benefits of having the new middle school directly behind the current high school include the “assumption that some outdoor physical education facilities will be shared” and the opportunity to consolidate traffic for bus and car-rider pick-up and drop-off.

Board member Chrissy Bartz mentioned that she would have significant concerns with the traffic at the Double Hills Road site, especially during beach traffic season. Another board member, Troy Plutschak, said he has seen the benefits that having the high school and middle school on the same campus has shown in the southern part of the county with Colonel Richardson High School and Middle School.

After the brief presentation by Caroline County Public Schools’ Director of Operations Bill Mengel and discussion by board members, Plutschak motioned to select the North Caroline site as the official site of the new middle school build. Board member Stephanie Johnson seconded the motion and it unanimously carried, with Board President Michele Wayman absent from the vote.

“That’s your spot, Bill,” said Board member Mark Jones, “we appreciate all the work that you’ve done.”
