Caroline is Better Together When Attendance is High

There has been an observed phenomenon over the last couple of decades regarding attendance with school, with work, with appointments. There are data that show how performance suffers when a student or employee has regular poor attendance, and there are data that equally show that when one “shows up,” outcomes improve.

In 2026, the Caroline Better Together leadership team identified improving student attendance as the target priority for the collective work of Caroline Better Together.

Being guided by the mission, “Improve the well-being of Caroline County residents by collectively engaging our efforts and services with a special emphasis on reducing poverty in our county,” the leadership team recognizes that student attendance directly impacts outcomes across the lifespan. A student that understands and practices good attendance may be more likely to take those habits to the workplace.

Following the creed, “When We All Show Up, Kids Succeed” the goal is to improve regular attendance for Caroline County Public School students by collectively addressing barriers to attendance and strengthening, wholechild supports - improving academic engagement, long-term outcomes, and establishing life-time routines.

Action Teams will focus on engaging all sectors in supporting student achievement through regular attendance.

The Action Teams:

  • Family & Workforce Resources
  • Economic Mobility & Workforce Development
  • Quality of Life & Well-Being
  • Early Learning
  • Youth Development & Education

The focus areas:

  • Community Resource Navigation
  • Food & Other Basic Necessities
  • Health & Behavioral Health Services
  • Parent & Family Engagement Activities
  • Child Care
  • Out of School Time Opportunities

Working together toward the collective goal of lowering the number of students who miss more than 18 days of school is one reason why Caroline Better Together is such an important initiative. Bringing together the school, businesses, community support services to help students thrive is what makes our community where residents have access to the resources that support stability and growth.
