CENTREVILLE, Md. — For 32 years, Camp New Dawn has offered grieving children, teens, and families a place to remember loved ones, connect with others who understand loss, and begin to heal.

This year, the Compass grief retreat welcomed 60 children and teens and seven families August 8–11 for several days of camp activities, grief support, and community connection.

“Camp New Dawn gives children and families a safe place to grieve, remember, and grow,” said Rhonda Knotts, Director of Support Services and Director of Camp New Dawn. “For many campers, it is the first time they realize they are not alone in their grief. That connection can be life-changing.”

Along with swimming, crafts, games, waterfront activities, bonfires, and time with peers, campers participated in guided grief support activities. This year’s theme, “Growing Through My Grief,” included a therapeutic focus called “Healing the Broken Pieces.” Campers decorated and reassembled broken pieces of a pot as a symbol of strength, healing, and continued growth.

The retreat also carried special meaning as the Camp New Dawn community remembered three beloved members who were deeply missed this year: Jacob Little, Mr. Tom Baker, and Lumi.

Jacob Little first came to Camp New Dawn as a camper after the death of his father in 2018 and later returned as an adult buddy, offering the same kind of support he once received. His kindness and steady presence left a lasting impact on the camp community.

Mr. Tom Baker served Camp New Dawn for 15 years, generously sharing his time and talents to help make camp possible. The community also remembered Lumi, a beloved four-legged friend who brought comfort and companionship to grieving children for more than a decade.

Camp New Dawn also included adult and family camp, giving families the chance to heal together through shared activities, conversation, and support from others who understand loss.

No child or family is turned away from Camp New Dawn because of inability to pay. The retreat is made possible through the generosity of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community members who give their time, resources, and hearts to support grieving children and families.

Compass provides hospice care, grief support, and community programs for individuals and families facing serious illness, grief, and loss.
