Board of Education renews Dr. Derek Simmons’ superintendent contract

DENTON – For the first time in 20 years, the Caroline County Board of Education voted Tuesday, February 3, to renew the contract of a sitting superintendent.

Dr. Derek Simmons, who began his career teaching in Caroline County, will remain the Superintendent of CCPS for at least four more years. The contract will be up for renewal again in 2031.

After a round of applause, Board President Michele Wayman remarked, “your reappointment shows that the board respects, honors, and takes seriously your determination and the work that you have done to move Caroline County forward. And we appreciate that. So, on behalf of the board, the students, the staff, the community, we welcome you back.”

Dr. Simmons read aloud from a prepared statement, during which he thanked his wife and two daughters for their continuous support, “it's not easy to be the wife of a superintendent, not just because of social media, but especially when you teach in the same system. Brit, you are my best friend, and the glue that makes our crazy life and schedules work,” he said, “To my daughters, Chloe and Sienna, it's also not easy being the kids of the superintendent in the same school district. You two handle it with grace and poise… a dad couldn't ask for two better kids.”

“Serving our community is a blessing. It is something that I'm blessed to be able to do, and I'm grateful for another four years to continue serving our community,” he finished.
