All About Hair in Ridgely, celebrates 20 years, and it reflects the dedication and hard work by owner Patricia “Trisha” Puckett.
Puckett, originally from Baltimore, began cutting hair as a way to save money for her family. "I had three boys and taking them to get a haircut was expensive. One year we got our taxes back and I said, 'I'm going to barber school.’ Twenty years later, here we are.”
Over the years, Trisha's customers have become more like family. "There's not much we don't know about them and that they don't know about us." Trisha says, "On most days there are people who just come by to visit and after school the neighborhood kids play football in the backyard."
The shop's vintage house setting adds to the welcoming vibes. It's a busy shop, people come and go all day long. Much like the movie "Steel Magnolias," it has become a gathering spot for young and old. "I had an older gentleman, now passed away, I'd make him coffee every morning," Trisha recollects, "we even feed the birds and the stray cats here."
Her daughter Crystal, at the age of 3, would go to work with her mom and paint people's toenails and fingernails. She grew up in the salon and went to cosmetology school. Now she works with her mom cutting hair and doing nails. She also enjoys substitute teaching.
Prices are kept low to help customers. "I'd rather let them go get an ice cream cone over at the pharmacy with the money they are saving," Trisha says.
When Trisha retires, she hopes to have a mobile barber shop and travel to her customer's homes to take care of them. For now, she will continue to be part of the community.
“Some days are hard and I want to quit. But then the next day, customers come in with a smile, and you're right back huggin' and cuttin'.”
